Ground - SUP - Foil
Winging is the fastest growing sport out there, and can be executed on ground (asphalt or dirt), on snow and on water. Winging is significantly less dangerous than kiting because the wing does not generate as much power as the kite can, and is very intuitive when trying to regulate the amount of power that fills the wing. Winging has rendered water and wind sports more accessible to the general population with a significantly reduced risk of injury.
Traction winging (dirt, grass, asphalt or snow) is usually performed with either a long board, mountain board, snowboard or skis. Although the impact of falling while traction winging can cause injury, it can be avoided by simply jumping off the board and 'running out of it'. Snow winging is a little more forgiving due to the slippery nature of the snow. A ground lesson will teach a student about the gear, how to handle the wing and use it to propel themselves around a specific area as well as learn to quickly depower the wing to regain and remain balanced on the board. A typical ground lesson can be anywhere from 1-2 hrs.
SUP winging is usually the first step to learning to wing foil. Because learning to wingfoil involves learning to fly the wing and foiling congruently, it is easier to learn how to fly the wing and be able to maneuver oneself around on the water using a SUP with a keel (dagger board/center fin). Being able to move around in any direction while on the water (upwind, crosswind and downwind) under wing power alone is essetial before trying it on a foilboard. Either way, there is a lot of time spend climbing back on the board after falling in the water. Our lessons include a tandem instructor that helps keep the board a little more stable as you regain balance and begin to use the wing to propel yourself. At first you will end up downwind and given the bulkiness of the equipment, it's best to have a ride/shuttle to scoop you and the gear up, wherever you end up. Usually 2-4 hrs are needed to learn to navigate a SUP and wing setup.
Wing foiling is the fastest growing water sport in the world because it's not really dangerous and it is really accessible to anyone near a body of water where wind blows more than 10 knots. Although some prior foiling experience (behind a boat or a kite) can help the learning curve, it is not essential to trying the sport out. There is an incredible amount of balance needed to fly the wing and balance the foil so your tenacity, patience and determination will be tested. The number of times you will climb back onto the board will seem infinite and you will feel like giving up, but nobody ever learned anything by giving up. Hopefully once you see a 70yr old cruise by you on the water you will be inspired to push through the frustration and be determined enough to learn it. You won't regret it.
Wingfoiling is often performed on larger, more buoyant boards that are often strapless, however the technology is progressing the sport to smaller less bulky boards, and straps are used for riders that want to jump. This portion of winging can take anywhere from a couple days of downwinding to months depending on your physical fitness and determination. At Rasta beach we have the right gear to get you learning and progressing quickly.
